TAG – YOU’RE IT!!!
Here I am, your 2007-2008 Memphis Chapter President, again saying thank you for your many votes of confidence over the last few weeks. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine this day coming so quickly. I had anticipated a year filled with many opportunities to broaden my leadership skills under Janet’s reign. Unfortunately, Janet never imagined how dramatically her life would change, either. We miss you, Janet, and look forward to your return to EWI!
Your 2007-2008 board is off to a roaring start! We have some exciting fundraising opportunities to pursue and several firm nights planned not to mention the big celebration coming next fall involving a certain professor at the University of Memphis……
We are here to serve this chapter. Please contact us with suggestions as well as concerns.
Happy 50th Birthday Memphis!!!
The Memphis Chapter of Executive Women International (then known as Executives’ Secretaries, Inc.) was charted on October 19, 1957. There were 19 member firms for that first meeting, one of which is still a member firm today. Any guesses on which firm it is???? Today, as Executive Women International, we boast 53 member firms, 61 representatives, 1 transitional member, 12 sustaining members, 1 lifetime member and 1 honorary member!
As I look over letters and telegrams sent to congratulate the chapter, I am reminded of how much has changed in 50 years. In 1957, all correspondence was hand typed….a president’s pin cost $17.60 from O.C. Tanner….congratulatory messages were sent via Western Union…RSVP’s were mailed in….
We will celebrate fond memories, outstanding leadership and vision for the future on November 15th at The University Club. A grand evening is planned – we hope to see you there!
Reading Rally
What a wonderful time we had at Hollywood Community Center with the Springdale Elementary School 4th graders! Over six weeks ago we challenged them to “Be a Reader, Be a Leader” with a reading competition. On Friday afternoons, we hosted Reading Rally Momentum events with community partners United States Postal Service, Briarcrest Christian School, Business Equipment Center, the University of Memphis Athletic Department and FedEx. The day before Reading Rally, we hosted an ice cream party with the help of Ernst & Young. When the children came to Reading Rally at the Hollywood Community Center on Saturday they enjoyed a “book walk”, pizza and cookies and an inspirational talk by FedEx employee & author Dwight Fryer. The day ended with the presentation of prizes from the “Minutes Matter” reading competition. The grand prize winner, Jarvis Boyland, read 1177 minutes!! Thank you to Melinda Edwards, B/C/DP chairman and her great committee for making a HUGE difference in the lives of those children. I also thank ALL of you for your generous donations of prizes and goodie bag items for both the kids and parents.
Share your Brilliance with EWI!
At installation, I challenged you to share your “brilliance” with EWI. Each one of us has talents and ideas (which is your inner brilliance) to bring to the chapter. Committee assignments have been posted and I encourage you to challenge yourself to do just a little more for EWI. Our committees are the glue which keep the chapter together! Ways & Means, membership, B/C/DP and programs need YOUR support to have a successful year. With 100% participation, we will be even “bigger and better” in our 51st year as the Memphis Chapter of Executive Women International!
