Happy Birthday, Memphis Chapter!!! We are 50 years YOUNG!!! This month we will don our party hats, make some noise and celebrate the memories spanning 50 years! I will invite you to share any special memories you have during our chapter meeting on March 20 at The Crescent Club.
It was so nice to see everyone dressed in RED for our February meeting!! Deborah Vaughn and Kim Patterson (NOI Memphis) did an AWESOME job of putting together a “Women’s Wellness” Table. It was covered with brochures on women’s health issues along with plenty of Pink Ribbon freebies (chocolate hearts, pencils, pens, Post-it notes and erasers). The best part was the raffle of the beautiful pink leather tote bag (donated by NOI Memphis). Congrats to Kathleen Swann (National Specialty Advertising) for having the winning ticket! The proceeds from the special raffle are being sent to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in honor of Beth Washington (AT&T), a 10 year breast cancer survivor.
Dr. Irvin Fleming, Professor of Surgical Oncology and Past President of the American Cancer Society, spoke to us about the history of Dr. Papanicolau and his discovery of the “Pap” Smear. Along with Dr. Pap, doctors from University of Tennessee developed the Pap Smear program right here in Memphis. Memphis was one of a select group of cities that launched a city-wide program in the 1950’s to encourage women to participate in the test at no charge. Dr. Fleming also shared with us the latest information on the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge project here in Memphis. Hope Lodge provides a “home away from home” for cancer patients who live far from treatment centers. The Memphis Hope Lodge will be constructed on the corner across from Sun Studio on Union Avenue.
I encourage you to participate in the Representative of the Year process – so many of you work tirelessly all year for our chapter and this is the ultimate “thank you” from the chapter. The Rep of the Year 2008 form can be found on the Home Page. The deadline for submission to Melinda Edwards (Juice +), B/C/DP Chairman, is May 31, 2008.
So…..don’t forget to bring a wrapped birthday present to the party – and the more door prize tickets you purchase, the better chance you have to go home with a present or TWO!!
